Only a few days at Christmas and there is panic for the last minute gifts …
This post won’t be another guide to the perfect gifts, but it wants to help to avoid mistakes.
Here is a list of tips and curiosities, with few ideas to copy and gifts you should never give!
THE PERSON WHO GETS THE GIFT HAS TO LIKE IT, NOT WHO GIVES IT
Rule number one: never buy a gift trusting that you would like to receive it. Bet rather on the recipient’s taste, although they are very different from your own. Of course, the gift comes from you, but you will not keep it.
The real secret is in listening and observing: take note each time that person will stop at a shop window or if she says some comments on something she likes. Conversely, if she never wears perfume or earrings, draw your own conclusions …
IT’S NOT A MATTER OF BUDGET
As for style, it’s never a matter of budget. To give a nice gift, just hit the mark. Example: Does your friend collect dreamy shoes? No need to give her a pair of Louboutin, you can make her happy with a photographic book about the history of shoes.
BEWARE OF EXPECTATIONS
I highly suggest not to talk to much about the gift before giving it, because you could give too many expectations. Avoid too much emphasis and enthusiasm, because even a diamond can disappoint when the tiara Elizabeth was expected .
Speaking of value, did you know that those who receive a gift gives it a perceived value of 20% less than the actual value? Keep this in mind when you buy gifts and be smart: if they have the same price, sometimes you should focus on things that are more showy.
THE GIFT THAT IS ALWAYS APPRECIATED
I know, someone is probably thinking of the envelope with money, like when we were young. But I’m not talking about that, God forbid! The gift that is always appreciated is food and wine: local products or high pastry or a good wine.
GITFS FOR KIDS
When you do a gift to a child, you need to know that he/she is just the final recipient: in fact, you have to come to terms with his/her mother. So, think twice before giving games that get dirty or encumber or may go against the rules set by their parents.
The most risky gifts are those for the home. If you know very well the style of the apartment and taste of the owner, then go ahead. But if you are not sure, desist. Otherwise you will force her to pull out the porcelain shepherd from the drawer every time inviting you to dinner.
The worst gifts are those made out of laziness, like: I had no idea, I had no time, and I did not want to … I am referring to those impersonal that we all have received at least once in your life: the women’s fragrance, men’s tie, the scarf, the candle …
THE MOST HATED GIFTS
You give pajamas and slippers as a gift only yo those who are going to be hospitalized, so please avoid them. Unless it is a underwear by Agent Provocateur, with coordinated slipper. Instead, you can give a precious photo album with your favorite memories to grandparents.
EVERYBODY HAS EVERYTHING
It’s so hard to make gifts, because everyone seems to have anything! Everything except the time. So why don’t you create an experience, perhaps to share? The ticket for a concert or a sporting event, a subscription to the theater, a day at the spa, classes …
In the next post pre-Christmas I will talk about the ETIQUETTE of the GIFT: do not miss it!
