That strange fear of cutting your hair

In these years of work as image consultant I have met many women with a certain fear of cutting their hair: it’s something visceral, deep, inexplicable.

Here are 10 thoughts about it and as many good reasons to get a haircut:

HAS SOMETHING CHANGED (OR WILL CHANGE?)

When a woman cuts her hair, everybody asks what has changed. But we don’t always cut our hair as a result of a change. Maybe the haircut is the first (big) step towards a change that until that moment was not ripe.

IT MAKES NO SENSE

I know so many lovers of long hair, but they always keep it tied. Either because they don’t have time to wash it, or because they don’t know how to fix it, or because they can’t stand it loose. So what is the point? They don’t enhance their long hair. Might as well have a nice short haircut.

THE PRACTICALITY OF SHORT HAIR

Who has long hair knows that the schedule is based on the shampoo program. They are things that men can’t understand, but the commitment that requires to wash long hair is not a small thing. If you have short hair, you don’t have this kind of problem.

THE (FAKE) PRACTICALITY OF LONG HAIR

According to some, short hair is challenging because it requires a more frequent maintenance than long hair. Partly it’s true: who has short hair must fix the haircut more often. But the truth is that even long hair would need it often, in order to be really neat.

OBSTINACY

Long hair must be healthy, otherwise it’s better to give up. For each of us, the hair has a so-called breaking point, beyond which it doesn’t longer grow or otherwise it breaks and thins out. Why should we go beyond that limit and persist in taking the hair long?

A PSYCHOLOGICAL QUESTION

Underlying the fear of hair cut is often the fear of not being able to go back. Well, this is the first taboo to overcome: question your certainties and accept that you can (indeed must) change. Here, consider it as an exercise of mental agility.

THE SHAPE OF THE FACE

Obviously the cut shouldn’t be random: it is not that one or the other! You have to consider the shape of the face, the profile, forehead, jaw and neck: they are foolproof measures and proportions, almost geometric. The right hairstyle can enhance the face in surprising ways.

SHAPE OF THE BODY

Some women try everything to lose weight and don’t know that to slim the figure you should just cut your hair. Yes, because it’s not just about the shape of the face, but also the shape of the body. Looking at full-length (mirror or photos) you will notice how much a thick mass of hair can weigh down.

A MATTER OF AGE

The female world is divided into two categories: those that look like girls and want to feel more mature; and those that look mature and want to feel more young. In both cases, you have to get a haircut! Long hair has the Pollyanna effect on the first ones and an old effect on the second ones.

A MATTER OF STYLE

Long hair is beautiful, of course. Provided, however, that is consistent with a precise style strategy. We often believe that only clothes create style, underestimating the beauty part. The truth is that every great change of look begins with a new hairstyle …

And are you one of those who like to experiment or do you prefer long hair indefinitely?
